Why Integrate the Arts and Technology With Literacy?
“Listening and speaking are the original modes of language acquisition and development.”
“Teachers structure learning activities to promote students’ playful discovery of language.”
“Teachers provide opportunities for self-expression and peer interaction, and they help students engage in meaningful discussion.”
“They provide opportunities for students to develop higher level thinking skills as they listen for specific purposes.”

Integrate 21st Century Skills With Core Competencies (4 CEU’s)
This series of project-based courses introduces teachers, site coordinators, and associates to Web 2.0 Tools that integrate Core Competencies in English Language Arts with technology and current ASEP programming choices. Each course includes a two-hour face-to-face class (F2F) and a four-week online course. Participants learn how to use successful, educational Web 2.0 tools to integrate Core Competencies in English Language Arts with inquiry, critical thinking, collaboration, and multimodal communication. They receive support, formative assessment from Janice, and feed-back from colleagues as they complete their projects.
“Folktale Festival” Teacher Training (10 hours)
In a week-long residency, Janice leads students and teachers through story exercises and games based on folktales that increase proficiency with story structure, creativity, and vocabulary. Students learn to retell a favorite story using character voices and gestures. This program is aligned with the Standard Course of Study for North Carolina and with National Board Standards for teachers (NBPTS).
Story Time (8 hours)
Teachers learn the importance of oral reading and oral narrative for all age groups. They explore creative ways to energize oral reading and storytelling. They learn strategies for dramatization and creative movement that extend and personalize the story. Teachers also learn strategies for open-ended discussion following the story to promote character education and a positive classroom climate.
Puppet Time (4 hours)
Puppets provide a powerful means for conveying ideas, teaching content in all subjects, and enabling students to communicate what they have learned. Puppets develop students’ imagination and creative expression. In this workshop teachers learn how to make and use a variety of inexpensive puppets and discover the limitless possibilities for puppets in the classroom.
Center Time (4 hours)
Teachers learn how to develop integrated thematic centers based on a favorite book or story. Centers provide for differences in learning styles and interests, creativity, and imaginative play that takes learning well beyond the scope of textbooks and workbooks. In centers, students apply knowledge and act independently. This workshop also offers suggestions for assessment of learning by teachers and self-assessment by students
Digital Storytelling (4 hours)
Teachers explore inexpensive ways to publish stories and PSA’s using digital technology. Modes of publication include: movies, Voice Threads, podcasts, and hardbound books. Janice shares ideas for managing projects, materials, and student behavior.
